Summer Jam 1997 in Köln (04 - 06/07/96)

The Report from the German Reggae Node for Summer Jam 1997

We had a good festival with some rain and lots of sunshine. Good music and bad music, good organisation and bad organisation. But all in all it was a very good Summer Jam. About 15.000 People attended the festival (paying visitors). Probalbly 5-10.000 wild campers that were not at the festival...

The real Summerjam returned back to Germany!

Thanks to the organizers: they gave us the same feelings as we got used to on Loreley! And this is not only lead back to this very nice area at Cologne's Fuehlinger See!
What people missed last year, was the "subculture" on the festival- and camping-area, for example small private businesses on the camping area (food, clothes, coffee...) and, the most important thing for lots of summerjam-fans: music all night long (and even all morning long...) from various soundsystems!
This year you could find again all these things and it was again this great fun, walking from soundsystem to soundsystem, staying a while dancing, going a couple of steps aside and listen to different basses coming from not too far away out of the darkness and directing the way to the next sound.
As far as I know, there have been at least 5 or 6 sounds, and much more DJs and selectors, who didn't bring their soundsystem with them, but their own 7 inches so they could ask the soundsystems on the area about putting on music.
These are some of the points, which make the german Summerjam famous for its special flair...
Living this atmosphere, all complaints about uncomfortable camping spots or long distances to the concert-area or difficulties to get tickets are forgotten (oups, I hope so, but I actually did!!).
So far I didn't mention the concerts. My personal favorites had been Luciano, Olodum and Dreadzone, ah, and Toure Kunda, although I had to escape from the thunder storm during their show.
Top act Bounty Killer didn't bring the show fans expected, because his show seemed very structured and studied.
In any case, like every year, the selections satisfied everyone, cause lots of different styles had been represented.

Greetings,
leider war das Wetter schon wieder verregnet. Das waren noch Zeiten,
garantierte Hitze auf der Loreley und in Wildenrath. Dieses Jahr waren
wir ja darauf vorbereitet unsere Sachen bis zum See zu schleppen.
Letztes Jahr wurden wir ja boese ueberrascht, was die Stimmung erstmal
drueckte. Gruppen wie Inner Circle, Big Mountain, leider auch Ziggy
Marley waren leider nicht so der Renner. Wann kommt Lucky Dube wieder!!
Contour koennte mehr aktuelle afrikanische Musiker bringen. Hoffentlich
fallen naechstes Jahr nicht wieder so viele angekuendigte Gruppen aus,
bzw. hoffentlich wird dann der Spielplan nicht so
durcheinandergewirbelt. NIE     mehr wieder Inner circle. PLEASE!!!!
Auf dem IRIE festival letztes Wochenende waren die Organisatoren ja wohl
heillos ueberfordert. Hatten whrscheinlich nicht mit so vielen Besuchern
gerechnet. Halbe Stunde anstehen fuer ein Bier, halbe STunde anstehen um
das Pfand zurueckzubekommen. Die Essenstände unter aller Kanone, 3 oder
4 Bierstaende. Nerv. Dafuer aber war die Music sehr gut. Besonders Misty
in Roots, Macka B, U-Roy und natuerlich Alpha Blondy. Konkurrenz belebt
die Szene, denke ich mal.

I AGREE FULLY WITH ANNE ON THE POSITIVENESS OF THE 
SUBCULTURAL ASPECT OF THE FESTIVAL, YET MUST BE CRITICAL 
REGARDING THE FESTIVALS' OVERALL ORGANISATION AS WELL AS 
CONTOUR'S PA-WORK.
EVER AFTER SATURDAY AFTERNOON'S DOWNPOUR THINGS BACK-
STAGE SEEMED TO SOMEHOW DE-RAIL. INSTEAD OF SHOWING SOME 
MUCH NEEDED FLEXIBILITY BY STOPPING THE SHOW FOR A COUPLE 
OF HOURS, THEN RE-ASSEMBLE AND PUBLIC ADDRESS A REVISED 
RUNNING ORDER, IGNORANCE RULED. 
ASIDE FROM ALL THE JOYFUL ASPECTS SURROUNDING A FESTIVAL 
OF THIS NATURE AND SIZE, IT IS PRIMARILY THE MUSICAL ACTS THAT 
THE REGGAE FAN FROM NEAR AND FAR TRAVELS TO SEE. AND AS 
MOST ACTS OVERNIGHTED NEARBY THAT NIGHT, THIS INTERFERENCE
COULD HAVE BEEN ARRANGED AND WORKED WELL.
AFTER HAVING TRAVELLED TO COLOGNE FROM MIAMI, IT IS NEEDLESS
TO STATE MY DISAPPOINTMENT TO HAVING ALMOST MISSED LUCIANO'S
PERFORMANCE OR TO HEAR THE BURNING SPEAR COME UNTO STAGE
AN HOUR EARLIER AS  ANNOUNCED BY THE RUNNING ORDER, WHILE I 
WAS CONDUCTING A PHONE CALL HOME ABOUT A MILE AWAY FROM 
THE STAGE. ANYHOW...  
MUSICALLY IT WAS A POSITIVE TO FEATURE CROSSOVER BANDS SUCH 
AS KING CHANGO, OLODUM OR SPEARHEAD ON THE MAIN STAGE. YET I 
HAD A HARD TIME COMING TO GRIPS THAT INTERNATIONAL REGGAE
SUPERSTAR BIM SHERMAN WAS TO PLAY TO A VERY LIMITED AUDIENCE 
IN THE TENT, WHERE HE TREATED US TO SOME OF HIS BEST, WHILE 
ANNOUNCED REGGAE CLASSICS SUCH AS CHALICE OR THE MUCH 
AWAITED ROOTS-DANCEHALLER CAPLETON NEVER SHOWED AT ALL.
LUCIANO PROVED TO BE THE MOST ACCLAIMED ROOTS- AND CULTURAL 
SINGER OF NOW WHO FALLS IN LINE WITH THE LATE GARNETT SILK OR 
SWEET COCOA TEA.
  
NEWS:
SO FINALLY IT SEEMS OFFICIAL - APPLE, "MR. SKANKING", HAS LEFT 
SKELLY, WISS AND THE ROOTS RADICS FOR GOOD IN ORDER TO 
PURSUE A SOLO CAREER. DURING THE LAST YEAR I HAD A CHANCE TO 
SEE INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCES BY THE TRIO, IN PLACES LIKE LONDON, 
SEATTLE, MIAMI - AND EVERYTIME THE TRUE STRENGTH OF THEIR 
PERFORMANCES CAME FROM THE THREE OF THEM DISPLAYING SUCH
MUSICAL TIGHTNESS AND HARMONY AND UNIQUENESS, THAT THERE 
INDEED SEEMED TO BE NO END TO THIS GOOD THING. 
UNFORTUNATELY SKELLY CONFIRMED THEIR RECENT SPLITTING TO BE 
OFFICIAL IN AN INTERVIEW RIGHT AFTER THEIR PERFORMANCE.

Hast Du so'n Schrott wie dieses Jahr am So. auf'm Summer Jam schon mal
erlebt?
Das Unertraeglichste war der graessliche Laerm bis zum Ausrasten der
Boxen (bei Big Mountain).
Das war kein Reggae, sondern dessen Vernichtung!
Setz Dich mal ein, dass Contour uns nicht nochmal so einen Krach und
Schrott abliefert. Ich bin bestimmt nicht der einzige, der sich selbst
bei verlockendstem Line-up in Zukunft doppelt und dreifach ueberlegen
wird, ob er/sie in den naechsten Jahren nochmal zum Summer Jam kommen
wird!
BTW: Was ist das fuer ein Kassentheater gewesen? Freunde, die am Sa.
bereits da waren, mussten zwei Stunden auf ihr Baendchen warten, und am
So. war die besser erreichbare zweite Kasse einfach geschlossen!
Contour sollte sich mal ueberlegen was an Proviant mitzubringen erlaubt
ist und was nicht und dieses auch im Vorfeld mal mitteilen!
Auch: Warum stellt Ford seine Parkplaetze nicht mehr zur Verfuegung?
Warum war die aufwaertige Landstrasse zum Gelaende dieses Jahr gesperrt?
Nicht einzusehen, warum schräg auf dem Gehweg in der Einoede parkende
Autos abgeschleppt wurden (Gottlob fand sich bei unserem Parkmaneuver
ein Polizist, der uns darueber aufklaeren konnte wie und wo wir
gefahrlos parken konnten, viele Unglueckseelige aber wohl nicht!): 
So hatten wir einen praechtigen Asphalt-Wandertag: mind. 5km Fussweg hin
und wieder zurueck.

I was at SummerJam travelling with Israel Vibration & the Roots Radics.
I thought the overall vibe of the site was excellent, and was very
positive about the response that we got for going on so early in the
day.  We were fortunate to get to work in the sunshine and hope we made
the sun before the rain all the more brighter.  I had not been to
Summerjam at that site - only the two previous sites - the airfield, and
the original Lorelei site.  The festival felt much more intimate and
positive than the sprawl of the airfield.  All in all a very positive
experience for the group, and good feelings from crowd on stage.
Respect to all reggae fans in Germany.

First of all I have to say that music and soundsystems were really
great.
But the organization of the event was that bad that I and hopefully
others too do not intend to join the event again. There are so many
things to complain about but as a conclusion I don't wanna feel like
cattle in fences again. The unhuman treatment of visitors culminated in
the fact that the only entrance for thousands of people was simply
closed for exit . Else I wasn't able to find even one garbage can !!!!
And I'm sure that CONTOUR again will accuse the visitors for leaving too
much garbage on the site.
A few more facts:
- 5 DM parking fees even at places 3 km away
- the stupid ticket-system for beverages without the possibility to give
  back unused tickets
  
- Water: 5 DM and no own beverages to be allowed to take in;
- ignorant staff with the only aim to let the visitors feel their power

Halloele !
Ich war nun das 4. mal auf dem Sumer Jam. Ich muß sagen, auch wenn der
Fühlinger See landschaftlich sehr schön ist, überwiegen doch leider die
negativen Seiten, im vergleich zum Flugplatz Wildenrath.
Wir waren mit 12 Leuten , u.a. mit einem Wohnmobil, dort, und waren total
darauf eingestellt, wie die letzten Jahre, die Fahrzeuge mit auf das
Gelände nehmen zu können. Obwohl wir schon FR am frühen Abend ankamen,
hatten wir um 23.00 Uhr erst alle einen Parkplatz. DER HAMMER : Ein paar
Typen verlangten dann noch 10,- DM Parkgebühr, und klebten dann einfache
gelbe Aufkleber aus dem Schreibwarenladen auf die Scheiben, aber ausweisen
konnten die sich nicht. Nach etwas Streit gab er dann auf und sagte "..haut
bloß ab.."
Nun lag also pro Person etwa 4x der Fußweg von ca 2km vor uns, um unsere
Zelte dann etwa 4km vom Konzertbereich entfernt aufbauen zu können. Es war
echt toll, denn Musik hatten wir im Auto, und kochen und so sollte im
Wohnmobil geschehen, was ja nun auf dem Parkplatz stand. Man hätte es
wenigstens ankündigen müssen, daß das Befahren des Campinggeländes nicht
erlaubt wird !!!!!  
Wie schön war es in Wildenrath zwischen den urigsten Bussen ,
LKW,Caravans,...!!!
Auch das ganze Klima in Köln ist nicht mehr so "peacig" gewesen. Die
Betonbrücken, Gebäude, das Durcheinander mit den "unbeteiligten" Menschen,
all das läßt einen das Gefühl nicht loswerden, in der Großstadt zu sein.
Zudem waren durch das freie Campen und die nähe zu Köln viele Leute , die
gar nichts mit Reggae am Hut haben, auch da, um einfach mal wieder "Party
zu machen", was die Reggae-Stimmung dann auch etwas störte. Entsetzlich
waren vor allem die "Möchtegern-Rambos" vom Sicherheitsdienst. Wofür,
bitteschön waren die denn da ??? Von Wildenrath kennt man nur nette
Polizisten, und nie ist mehr nötig geweseen, geschweige denn irgendetwas
losgewesen !!!
Wie schön war es in Wildenrath, als man von Horizont zu Horizont nur den
blauen Himmel und die Zelte sah, und man den Eindruck hatte, nicht mehr in
Deutschland zu sein !!!
Ich war auch sehr enttäuscht, daß man den Reggae-Markt von dem großen
Parkplatz bei der Bühne in eine kleine Ecke gezwängt hatte, wo er an Größe
dann auch sehr verlor. Auch gab es in Wildenrath z.B. noch Bungee-Jumping,
Großkino,..., und der Markt erstreckte sich über viele 100 m, über den man
auf geteerten Wegen auch nach Regen schländern konnte, ohne nach dem
Festival Schuhe und Socken wegschmeißen zu müssen.
Daß das Programm schon fast mehr als schwach war, lag natürlich nicht am
Fühlinger See, und warum verbannte man dann auch noch einen  Superstar wie
Bim Sherman inīs Zelt ??? Als wir Burning Spear sehen wollten, war der
schon fast fertig mit seinem Auftritt, weil einfach so das Programm
vorverlegt wurde, echt super !
Also, nach diesem Frust - Festival kann ich wirklich nur Contour anflehen,
doch bitte, bitte wieder nach Wildenrath zu gehen und nächstes Jahr mal
wieder "richtigen" Reggae zu bringen und nicht so ein "Billigprorgamm" !!!
Diese 88,- Dm waren wirklich nicht gerechtfertigt und nächstes Jahr werde
ich für so Etwas nicht noch mal 88,-Dm ausgeben.
In Hoffnung auf gründliche Überarbeitung des Jam - Konzepts von Contour
erst mal beste Grüße !    REINHARD

Greetings all Reggaefans,
I've just been on my first SummerJam-Festival last weekend,
and it was great. We were a pose of sixteen induviduals from
Copenhagen Denmark, who all love reggae. We had been looking
forward for this event for a long long time..
But I must say:
- This is the worst organized festival I've seen. Especially the problems
regarding enterring and leaving the island. We
waited for nearly 3 hole hours
when we arrived friday at 21.00 hours.
But as Anne writes, the subculture of the festival and the music, made it
all worth while.

Musical comments:
Thumbs up:
- Luciano rules! In my openion Luciano gave the best concert this year.
Great show, great voice, and great musicians (especially Dean Frazer)
- Burning Spear,  Reggaes grand old man, still knows how!
- Olodum, Great show, but PLEASE stop playing Marley songs.... No woman no
cry, with a samba groove!!! Let Ziggy and Steve play their fathers songs.
- Ziggy, Closed the main scene saturday. He, on the other hand should
concentrate on playing his fathers songs, because he (and Steve) do them so
well.
- Bim Shermann, Another great artist. A shame he was,nt put on the main stage.
- Zion Train, Last band on summerjem 97. "Techno-Dub" greatly inspired by
the old dub-masters like Perry and Tubby, but with the energy and sound of
modern techo. A great mixture, and perhabs a glimps of future reggae
sound??!!?
- Bounty Killer, not as bad as some say!!! Good tight roughneck band.

Should have stayed home:
- Apache Indian, OK, he came one a very short notice, fair enough. But his
band gave the worst performance this year. All maked lots of mistakes, even
when they did'nt, the music was'nt tight....(chuck there!!!) What a shame.
Apache him self tried to lift the show singlehanded, but he could'nt. He
should have just brought a DJ.
- Innercircle, Borring, soft pop reggae, without soul. (Miller has left the
building!)
But all in all we had a great time. Many thanks to the reggaefans of Germany,
who made this posible. The reggae-scene in Denmark is not nearly as big as in
Germany, so I guess the conclusion is:
SE YOU NEXT YEAR,
And CONTOUR: Don't let us down again!!!

About Summerjam '97 
I think i was one of the lucky ones who stayed at home
listening to some artist which CONTOUR doesn't seem to know
or they don't want to know them.
I'm getting sick and tired of seeing the same artists at their
festival.
This is no dis-respect to any of the artists, but i just can't 
understand why they don't bring at least a few artists who where
not in Europe since last year.
Just in case a Contour member reads this, here is a list of
artists i mean.
What about Jr. Reid, Mykal Roze, Wailing Soul, Anthony B, Richie
Stephens, Lady Saw, General Degree, Lt. Stitchie, Frankie Paul,
Culture, Third World, Steel Pulse, Sizzla, etc. etc. etc.
Next matter
If i wan't to see African artist ( sometimes i do ) i would go
to an African concert, if i want to see hip-hop artist ( i never do )
i would go to an hip hop concert, sameway about bout drum & bass and
some other non reggae styles featured at this cloth festival.
Please Contour stop killing reggae music and bring back the RED, GOLD
and GREEN if you can.
Please also stop announcing artists which you can't get.
TIP Smoke some more chronic and maybe you will get some better vibes !

We received a comment of Contour Music about the organisation of the Summer Jam 1997 in November. This comment is in German only as we are too lazy to translate:

SUMMER JAM FESTIVAL 1997

Wieder ist viel schiefgelaufen, das Wetter hat auch nicht so mitgespielt - obwohl es noch schlechter hätte sein können. Wenn das Geländer erst einmal durchfeuchtet ist, ändern sich alle Bedingungen drastisch: Ver- und Entsorgungsfahrzeuge kommen nicht auf das Gelände, der Schlamm ist überall.....

Entschuldigen müssen wir uns definitiv über die Zustände am Eingangsbereich. Wegen der Auflage einer ungehinderten Zufahrt für Einsatz- und Rettungsfahrzeuge durften wir den Einlaß nicht über die große Brücke durchführen.

Die Einsatzleiter haben jedoch bereits am ersten Abend eingesehen, daß diese Auflage unzumutbar ist (weegen dem großen Gedränge an der kleinen Brücke) und diese Auflage für das nächste Jahr (1998) gestrichen. Es wird also 1998 große Eingangsschleusen, die eine rasche Abwicklung ohne große Wartezeiten ermöglichen, geben.

Gut angekommen ist nach unseren Informationen das Musikzelt. Wir werden dieses Rahmenprogramm im nächsten Jahr (1998) weiter ausbauen. Es wird mindestens 3 Zelte und die Hauptbühne geben.

Hallo Leute!
Ich war letztes Jahr auf dem Summer-Jam und war
eigentlich bis auf das RIESEN-PROBLEM am Eingang
eigentlich voll zufrieden.
Mein eigentliches anliegen ist, daß ich am Samstag Nachmittag
im Zelt die Reality Brothers gesehen habe und ich die Musik
sau-gut fand, aber leider nirgendwo etwas über die Band finde.
Nicht im Internet, nicht in Platten Läden.
Könnt ihr mir vielleicht weiterhelfen und Infos zu den
REALITY BROTHERS geben, ob sie vielleicht doch eine CD haben
oder wo man sie nochmal sehen kann?
Ich hoffe, ihr könnt mir weiterhelfen.
